The European Banking Authority (EBA) has published its final revised Guidelines on common procedures and methodologies for the supervisory review and evaluation process (SREP) and supervisory stress testing. This marks a significant step in improving the efficiency, coherence, and effectiveness of EU banking supervision.

The revised Guidelines are part of the EBA’s effort to enhance supervisory efficiency and simplification. They build on previous reports and aim to create a more risk-focused, proportionate, and forward-looking framework for EU supervisors.

Since their initial adoption in 2014, the SREP Guidelines have provided a common language for assessing credit institutions, supporting the development of the Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM), resolving cross-border supervisory disputes, and establishing the Banking Union. After nearly a decade, these guidelines are now updated to reflect supervisory experience and regulatory developments.

The updated Guidelines include targeted rationalisation measures, notably a 30% reduction in page count, while maintaining core objectives and structure. They are aligned with CRRIII/CRDVI and other regulatory changes, incorporating supervisory insights and peer reviews to enhance supervisory practices.
