The European Central Bank (ECB) has outlined its ongoing commitment to diversity and inclusion (D&I), emphasizing that diversity contributes to its success. Since 2010, the ECB has implemented various milestones, including public statements, gender strategies, networks, ambassador programs, and collaborative charters across the Eurosystem.

The ECB reports progress in increasing female representation across salary bands, with a 32 percentage point rise in senior management since 2010, reaching a critical mass of 33% in all bands. Measures supporting D&I include targeted outreach, inclusive language, flexible working arrangements, and comprehensive leave policies.

Research by ECB staff, such as the 2022 study on the gender promotion gap, shows that since 2011, the promotion gap between men and women has closed, partly due to policy changes and targeted initiatives. Women still apply less frequently for promotions, especially against external candidates, but efforts like leadership programs and mentoring aim to address this.

The ECB collaborates with other central banks through the ESCB & SSM D&I Charter, with 29 signatories committed to preventing discrimination, fostering inclusive culture, and sharing best practices. The ECB also participates in international conferences and cross-institutional exchanges to promote diversity across the financial sector.
