On March 24, 2026, in Nicosia, the Cyprus Employers & Industrialists Federation (OEB) held a ceremony to award Circular Economy Certificates to 19 hotel companies across Cyprus. This event marked the culmination of a four-year effort to promote the green transition of the Cypriot tourism sector through the principles of the Circular Economy.
The measure, titled “Promotion of the Circular Economy in Hotel Facilities,” was implemented by OEB in collaboration with the Deputy Ministry of Tourism. It was funded by the European Union’s Recovery and Resilience Mechanism, as part of Cyprus’s Recovery and Resilience Plan 2021-2026, demonstrating the readiness of local hotel businesses to adapt to environmental and economic challenges.
During the event, Deputy Minister of Tourism Mr. Costas Koumis emphasized the importance of upgrading Cyprus’s tourism model through sustainability and practical Circular Economy implementation. Minister of Finance Mr. Makis Keravnos highlighted the fiscal and developmental benefits of transitioning to circular business models and praised OEB for its efforts, noting the absorption of EU recovery resources.
OEB President Mr. George Pantelides stated that Cypriot tourism is leading the green transition and that the Circular Economy Certification Scheme enhances the sector’s quality and strategic position. He also mentioned ongoing cooperation with tourism operators and government ministries to develop targeted support plans, some of which are expected to be announced soon.
