The European Central Bank (ECB) announced that settlement in euro central bank money is now available through the Pontes platform, launched on 21 October 2026. Since September 2026, DLT transactions can be settled in central bank money.

DLT-based assets are being integrated into the collateral framework since March 2026, allowing them to be used as eligible collateral in Eurosystem credit operations. Interest from sovereign and supranational issuers is increasing, with European sovereign issuers exploring tokenised issuance, as noted in the Eurogroup+ statement on digital finance dated 9 July 2026.

European market infrastructures have adapted by launching services for DLT-issued securities alongside existing systems. The trend extends beyond Europe, with SEC staff no-action relief in December 2025 permitting DTCC to tokenize existing securities for three years.

Tokenisation offers benefits such as 24/7 seamless transactions, automation via smart contracts, reduced issuance costs, wider SME access, fractional ownership, and safer settlement anchored in central bank money through Pontes.

The ECB emphasizes the importance of an integrated, autonomous, and efficient ecosystem supported by common standards and interoperable networks. The Eurosystem’s core actions include offering risk-free settlement assets, providing liquidity against collateral, and fostering market innovation.

Development of the ecosystem involves the Appia and Pontes platforms, with ongoing stakeholder engagement through various channels. From 2027, market participants will be invited to contribute to the further development and design of the ecosystem, with a blueprint expected in 2028.

Further information and details are available in the official ECB press release.
