The European Central Bank (ECB) has published consolidated banking data as at end-March 2026, covering the EU banking system on a group consolidated basis.

The data include 335 banking groups and 2,284 stand-alone credit institutions and non-EU controlled subsidiaries and branches operating in the EU, representing nearly 100% of the EU banking sector’s balance sheet.

The dataset provides information on profitability, efficiency, balance sheet composition, liquidity, asset quality, asset encumbrance, capital adequacy, and solvency. Most reporters apply International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and the European Banking Authority’s standards, with some small and medium-sized entities using national standards.

Key figures for March 2026 include:

  • Total assets increased by 3.63% to €34.33 trillion from €33.13 trillion in March 2025.
  • Non-performing loans ratio increased by 0.02 percentage points to 1.98%.
  • Return on equity was 2.44%.
  • Common Equity Tier 1 ratio was 16.27%.

The published data also include some revisions to previous figures. For media inquiries, contact Benoit Deeg at +49 172 1683704.
