ECB unveils shortlisted designs for new euro banknotes and opens public survey

The European Central Bank (ECB) has unveiled ten shortlisted design proposals for the next series of euro banknotes. These designs are based on two themes: “European culture” and “Rivers and birds,” with motifs illustrating these themes.

Over 1,200 applications were received from graphic designers across Europe. Twenty-five designers were invited to submit proposals, which were shortlisted by an independent jury of 21 experts in fields such as graphic design, communication, neuroscience, and history. The jury’s selection resulted in ten design proposals.

The ECB has launched an online survey inviting the public across Europe to provide feedback on these proposals. The survey is open until September 21, 2026. An independent research company will conduct a parallel survey among a representative sample of euro area citizens. The ECB will publish a report on the survey results after the final design is selected.

The ECB’s Governing Council is expected to make a final decision on the new banknote design around the end of the year. The decision will consider the jury’s conclusions, technical assessments, and survey results. The chosen design will undergo further development and testing before entering circulation in subsequent years. Existing euro banknotes will remain valid and circulate alongside the new series.

This redesign marks the first complete update of euro banknotes since 2002. The new series aims to enhance security features, improve ease of authentication, and increase accessibility for visually impaired users. The ECB also seeks to reduce the environmental impact by using more durable and sustainable materials.
