Christine Lagarde, President of the European Central Bank, delivered a speech at the Deutsche Bundesbank official dinner in Berlin, highlighting Europe’s historical decisions and current challenges.

She reflected on Berlin’s history, from post-war reconstruction to Cold War divisions, and the critical choices faced by Germans and Europeans during these periods.

Lagarde noted that in 1949, West Germans chose to align with the West, influencing European integration. East Germans later chose freedom and unity after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

She explained that Europe once benefited from complementary relationships, expanding economically while maintaining integration. However, today, the global landscape has shifted towards a more competitive and geopolitically tense environment.

Lagarde outlined three pathways for Europe:

  • Accepting decline and becoming a ‘museum’ of history, which she dismisses as a mirage.
  • Focusing on national interests, which risks fragmentation.
  • Choosing unity and cooperation through the European Union, leveraging existing structures for collective strength.

She emphasized that working together enhances sovereignty and growth, citing initiatives like the savings and investments union and the digital euro as tools to strengthen Europe’s independence.

Lagarde concluded by referencing a medal of Alexander von Humboldt from the Münzkabinett, quoting him: “Difficult does not seem impossible to me,” encouraging Europe to embrace the challenge of building a united future.
