OEB Chairman’s statement on Middle East crisis and Cyprus economic activity

OEB Chairman Mr. George Pantelides issued a statement regarding the crisis in the Middle East and its impact on Cyprus.

He confirmed that Cyprus does not participate in military operations in the Middle East and will not be involved, as assured by the government.

The proximity of Cyprus to the conflict zone and an incident with a drone at the British Base of Akrotiri prompted immediate government response, with support from allied countries, mainly Greece, creating a strong defensive shield against threats or accidents.

Mr. Pantelides acknowledged citizens’ concerns but emphasized the importance of providing accurate information to prevent unnecessary panic.

He stated that business activity continues without significant obstacles across sectors, with the only negative development being the temporary suspension of some airline flights to Cyprus airports.

He noted that Hermes Airports confirmed most airlines have maintained their flight schedules, and some that had suspended flights have resumed routes to Larnaca and Paphos, contributing to stability and security.

The statement urged the government to consider measures to mitigate potential economic impacts, including increases in fuel and raw material prices, and to implement targeted support for the hotel and tourism sectors.

Mr. Pantelides praised the media for their role in objectively informing the public and guiding protective measures, expressing confidence in their continued responsible reporting to restore normalcy in the country.
