OEB issues recommendations for businesses affected by Middle East crisis

The Cyprus Employers and Industrialists Federation (OEB) has issued recommendations addressing issues faced by businesses due to the crisis in the Middle East, including companies operating within the British Bases that have suspended activities. The guidance also covers preparedness for activation of alarm sirens.

Employee Management

Solutions should be based on cooperation between employers and employees, respecting labor laws and culture. Engaging with trade unions is recommended. Suggested measures include:

  • Use of paid annual leave
  • Absence with partial earnings
  • Remote work / teleworking / working from home
  • Absence with remuneration and coverage of lost time upon return, via agreed arrangements
  • Unpaid leave

The goal is to protect workers’ income without additional burden on businesses. The Department of Labor Relations and Social Policy of OEB offers further guidance.

Business Preparedness for Siren Activation

OEB President Mr. Giorgos Pantelidis emphasized the importance of calm and returning to normal routines. The guidance, prepared by the Occupational Safety & Health Service of OEB, includes:

  • Designating responsible persons for emergency management
  • Identifying safe areas within premises (e.g., underground or windowless spaces)
  • Informing staff about emergency exits and assembly points
  • Ensuring availability of first aid kits and fire safety equipment
  • Maintaining an updated employee contact list

Actions During Siren Warning

When a warning sounds:

  • Immediately suspend work
  • Calmly move to the nearest safe space
  • Stay away from windows and glass surfaces
  • Remain in the safe area until authorities give instructions

During the alarm:

  • Stay calm and avoid panic
  • Follow business managers’ instructions
  • Assist colleagues if needed
  • Remain until the official end of the alarm

After the alarm:

  • Conduct a staff count
  • Provide first aid if necessary
  • Inspect premises for hazards or damage
  • Return to work once premises are confirmed safe

Important Reminder

In emergencies, businesses and staff must follow instructions from relevant state authorities only.
